The Position
Mission Critical Engineers is seeking a Mechanical Commissioning Associate to support the field execution of commissioning activities on complex data centre and mission-critical projects.
The Mechanical Commissioning Associate will work alongside the Lead Data Centre Commissioning Engineer & Project Manager and the commissioning team during system startup, test preparation, functional testing, integrated systems testing, and turnover.
Responsibilities
- Support and actively participate in L1–L5 commissioning activities, including factory acceptance testing, site acceptance testing, installation verification, pre-functional testing, functional performance testing, and integrated systems testing.
- Participate in field verification, testing, troubleshooting, and documentation of mechanical systems.
- Assist with commissioning of critical cooling infrastructure, including chillers, cooling towers, pumps, CRAH/CRAC units, air-handling systems, CDUs, liquid-cooling systems, hydronic systems, BMS, controls, alarms, and interlocks.
- Support verification of mechanical-system redundancy, control sequences, alarms, failover, recovery, maintainability, and response to abnormal operating conditions.
- Review mechanical drawings, specifications, submittals, equipment documentation, test procedures, control sequences, and operating manuals.
- Conduct site inspections and verify system installation, test readiness, and completion of pre-functional requirements.
- Assist with development, review, and execution of test plans, test scripts, checklists, test matrices, and acceptance criteria.
- Support testing of BMS points, alarms, monitoring, interlocks, equipment safeties, automatic sequences, and system response.
- Attend commissioning, test-readiness, and technical coordination meetings with owners, contractors, OEMs, consulting engineers, and MCE personnel.
- Maintain accurate test records, site observations, deficiency logs, meeting minutes, and project-status updates.
- Support test-day logistics, including site access, equipment availability, safety controls, temporary loads, required documentation, and OEM attendance.
- Assist in tracking deficiencies, verifying corrective actions, and confirming readiness for subsequent testing stages.
- Support owner training, turnover documentation, and transition of systems to the facility operations team.
- Follow MCE and project safety requirements at all times.
- Work from the Toronto office and project sites as required, with travel to client and project locations across Canada.
Qualifications
- Diploma or bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Building Systems Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Experience in mechanical construction, testing, commissioning, design, operations, maintenance, or related technical work is preferred.
- Foundational understanding of HVAC, hydronic, cooling, controls, and mechanical-system operation.
- Familiarity with redundancy, availability, resiliency, failover, and recovery concepts in mission-critical environments.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, P&IDs, control diagrams, specifications, and equipment manuals.
- Strong attention to detail, organization, and technical documentation skills.
- Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear technical notes, test records, and reports.
- Collaborative, dependable, and professional approach; able to work independently in the field and effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and relevant engineering, analysis, or documentation software.
- Ability to work safely in active construction and mission-critical environments.
- Valid driver’s licence and ability to travel 15–50% as required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in data centres, healthcare, industrial, laboratory, utility, or other mission-critical environments.
- Experience with chilled-water systems, cooling towers, CRAH/CRAC units, air-handling systems, liquid cooling, CDUs, BMS, or data centre cooling infrastructure.
- Familiarity with commissioning processes and L1–L5 testing.
- Eligibility for registration with Professional Engineers Ontario is an asset.
